First Strides – Learn to Skate

Part of the Dartmouth Crossing Speed Skating Club training pathway.

At a glance

6:00 p.m. · Tuesday & Thursday

First Strides is a welcoming starting point for new skaters of all ages who are learning to skate or developing their basic skating abilities. Whether you’re stepping onto the ice for the very first time or already have some experience, our friendly and supportive coaches help skaters develop skills and confidence at their own pace.

Through fun activities and structured lessons, participants develop the fundamental skating skills needed to become comfortable and confident on the ice. Older beginners are encouraged to contact the club to discuss the most suitable training group.

Practices are at RBC Centre on Tuesday and Thursday. Contact the club for current eligibility, fees and registration details.

What you will learn

Our First Strides program follows Levels 1–4 of Speed Skating Canada’s nationally developed First & Fast Strides curriculum. Skaters work on essential skills, including:

  • Balance and coordination on the ice
  • Getting up safely after falling
  • Gliding and skating forwards and backwards
  • Starting, stopping, and changing direction
  • Developing confidence and independence on skates

How Do Skaters Progress?

Our coaches regularly assess each skater’s development using the First & Fast Strides skill progression system. Skaters advance through the levels as they demonstrate the required skills, with an emphasis on individual improvement rather than competition.

Once skaters have developed a solid foundation, they can progress to our Fast Strides program.

Equipment

Skaters need an appropriate helmet, gloves, warm and comfortable clothing, and the required protective equipment. Club-provided skates may be available, subject to availability.
