Sledge and Speed Sledge Programs

Sledge racing was one of the first sports included in the Paralympic Games, in which it was known as Ice Sledge Speed Skating. It was last included in the Games at the 1998 Paralympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

In April 2023, Dartmouth Crossing Speed Skating introduced a sledge racing program on Arena D at the RBC Centre on Commodore Drive in Dartmouth. At the local level, as in sledge hockey, athletes with disabilities and able-bodied athletes participate in sledge programs together. Programs were offered on Saturdays through the fall and winter 2023-2024 season, and sledge racing was included in our Dartmouth Crossing Interclub meet on December 2nd and the Dartmouth Crossing Sprints on March 2nd.

Arena D in the RBC Centre has now been retrofitted for sledges. We are offering Try-a-Sledge, Intro to Sledge, and Speed Sledge programs. Sledges are available to borrow for Try-a-Sledge events and regular programs.

Register for Try-a-Sledge at
